Magical Facts about the Wizarding world's wands
You don't have to be a Potterhead to know that Harry Potter wands play a huge role in the magical universe! According to wand maker Ollivander, who studies a lot of wandlore deeply, wands are mysterious and magical tools that are complex and almost impossible to fully understand. In other words, you probably don't know much about the wands your favorite witches and wizards use, but would you like to know more? Here are some facts about wands in the Harry Potter universe.
The Elder wand is something special
The Elder wand, along with the Resurrection Stone and the Cloak of Invisibility, is one of the three items that make up the legendary Deathly Hallows. According to The Tale of the Three Brothers, it was the first Hallow allegedly performed by Death himself. According to legend, anyone who joined the wand with the other two relics would become the Master of Death. It is said to be the most powerful wand that has ever existed, capable of performing magical feats that would normally be impossible for even the most experienced magician.
Not just any tree
Not all trees are capable of producing wands.
"Only a minority of trees can produce wand-quality wood (just as a minority of people can produce magic)," it said in a passage. "It takes years of experience to know which ones have the gift, although the work is made easier when bowtruckles nest in the leaves as they never inhabit non magical trees."
Different woods have different personalities
The type of wood used for a wand often reflects the type of witch or wizard who will end up using it, as they are supposed to have "personalities" that are often very similar to the person they have chosen. For example, according to Ollivander. Applewood wands are great for people with lots of charm and charisma, blackthorn wands are used for "warrior types",
Wands have magical cores
The core of a wand is a magical substance that has been placed throughout the wood. This can be anything from unicorn hair to dragon heart string to phoenix feathers. Unicorn hair sticks are the hardest to draw in the Dark Arts, but dragon heart strands are the easiest. Phoenix feather bars have the greatest range of magic and are the rarest.
Wands have allegiances
A new witch or wizard traditionally selects multiple “virgin” wands in Ollivander's wand shop until they eventually find the one who gives them their allegiance (or “chooses” them). Although it is possible to obtain a wand by "earning" it from your master, wands generally retain some loyalty to the original owner. Some wands bend easily enough towards a new master, while others are extremely loyal.
"Brother wands" are one thing
Although no two wands are exactly alike, "sister wands" occur when two wands share a core from the same source. For example, Harry and Voldemort's wands each had a core of phoenix feathers taken from the tail of Albus Dumbledore's fellow phoenix Fawkes. As a result, these two wands could not be used successfully in a fight with each other.
The wand chooses the wizard
According to Garrick Ollivander in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the greatest wand maker in the world, it is the wand he chooses.
"The wand chooses the wizard," explains Ollivander. "That has always been clear to those of us who have studied wand ... If you are a wizard at all, you can channel your magic through almost any instrument. However, for best results, wherever the affinity is stronger between Wizard and wand. These connections are complex. An initial attraction and then a mutual search for experience, where the wand learns from the wizard, the wizard with the wand. "
