How To Make Squid Game Cookies

Ready to risk it all for a cookie? Let’s bake like your life depends on it.

If you’ve watched Squid Game, you know the cookie scene. That tense, nail-biting moment where one wrong move could mean game over (literally). The Dalgona cookie challenge, also known as the “Ppopgi” game, became instantly iconic.

And now? Fans everywhere are recreating the challenge at home. But here you don’t have to be under surveillance by masked guards to enjoy it.

So, if you’re planning a Squid Game-themed party or just want to flex your fandom in the kitchen, here’s how to make your own Squid Game cookies, aka honeycomb candy with a deadly twist (just kidding... unless you're playing for keeps).

What Are Squid Game Cookies?

Squid Game cookies are actually a real Korean street snack called Dalgona candy or Ppopgi. They’re made from just two simple ingredients of sugar and baking soda. Sounds easy? Technically, yes. But the challenge lies in the shape.

Traditionally, the candy is poured onto a tray and pressed with a metal shape like a circle, triangle, umbrella, or star. The goal? Carve out the shape without breaking the candy. Break it, and… well, we all saw what happened to Player 212.

Classic Dalgona Candy Recipe (Aka: The OG Way)

You’ll Need:

  • 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
  • A pinch of baking soda
  • A ladle or small pan
  • Parchment paper
  • Cookie-cutter shapes (star, triangle, umbrella, etc.)

Instructions:

  1. Melt the sugar: In a ladle or small pan, slowly melt the sugar over low heat. Stir constantly to prevent burning. You want it golden, not dark brown.

  2. Add baking soda: Once fully melted, remove from heat and immediately stir in a pinch of baking soda. The mixture will foam and turn a lovely caramel colour.

  3. Pour & press: Pour onto parchment paper in small circles. Quickly press it flat using a plate or spatula. Before it hardens, gently press your cookie cutter shape into the centre just enough to outline it.

  4. Cool: Let it set completely. It’ll harden into a brittle, candy disc.

  5. Play or Eat: Use a needle to try and carve out the shape without breaking it. Or just munch it with pride.

Fun Twists on the Classic

Not everyone wants to reenact deadly game night. Sometimes, you just want cute cookies. Here are a few fun and safer spins on the classic:

1. Dalgona-Inspired Sugar Cookies

Use your favourite sugar cookie recipe, and cut out the iconic shapes (circle, triangle, umbrella, star). Ice them with coloured royal icing to match the aesthetic or dust with golden sugar for a candy-inspired shine.

2. Chocolate Dalgona Pops

Melt chocolate and pour it into circle moulds, press in the shape outline with a cutter, and insert a popsicle stick. It’s Squid Game meets dessert on a stick.

3. Vegan-Friendly Dalgona Candy

Classic Dalgona is naturally vegan! But for those who want to add some flair without animal products, use vegan sprinkles, food colouring, or edible glitter to make your candy extra dramatic.

4. Mini Dalgona Cookie Kits (Party Style!)

Hosting a Squid Game-themed night? Make small cookies and give each guest a needle and one cookie. Time them. The winner gets bragging rights or a prize from your Squid Game stash.

Dalgona Cookie Challenge Tips

  • Use metal tools: plastic can melt or bend in the heat.

  • Work fast: The mixture hardens quickly. Have your cutters ready!

  • Don’t overheat: burnt sugar tastes… well, burnt.
